There's a lot of talk these days about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
Many genetic counsellors are not only talking about these concepts, but are reflecting, learning, and taking action to be better allies to people from minority groups.
Many genetic counsellors themselves are from a minority group, and often more than one.
Disability, chronic illness and neurodiversity is often forgotten about when it comes to DEI initiatives - even though 15% of the global population has a disability according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
DEI is important for everyone, not just specific groups. Disabled, chronically ill and neurodiverse people deserve to have barriers identified, removed and/or equalised so they can participate as fully as possible in all aspects of life - including genetic counselling graduate programs and the workforce.
As a profession, there is room to improve our DEI efforts in the disability, chronic illness and neurodiversity space. Dare To Be Aware doesn’t have all the answers. We aim to raise awareness, promote inclusion and strive for equity for disabled, chronically ill and neurodiverse genetic counsellors.
Come with us as we move forwards together.
