Who is Dare To Be Aware?

Dare To Be Aware is created by Janette Hayward (she/her), a genetic counsellor (GC), living in Sydney, Australia.

Janette lives with a genetically inherited chronic illness and associated comorbidities which sometimes disable her. Throughout the entirety of her education she experienced obstacles that her peers without disability, chronic illness or neurodiversity did not. She has been working as a genetic counsellor for a decade and still experiences obstacles that the majority of her colleagues do not.

Janette knows that her experiences are not isolated and are in fact experienced by GCs around the globe.

She hopes that this website and blog will create a space for others to share their stories - their wins, challenges, solutions and hopes - and will assist abled, well and neurotypical GC students and colleagues to be more aware of, provide equity for, and include their peers.

The blog post contributors are all real people.

Some contributors will be identified and some will choose not to be for privacy reasons.

A number of light bulbs hung at different lengths. Some of them have dashes around the bulbs suggesting the light is on. Some don't. The light bulbs are of a mid-blue colour.
